Cows long ago resolved that very contentious issue, care of the young. Any herd with several calves has a crèche or calf care centre. Calves gather in a selected spot under the watchful protection of two or three cows. The rest of the mammas go off happily grazing, confident that their little ones are safe. Childcare isn’t a feminist plot; it’s female wisdom in the bovine species.

The hungry babies approached the cow and she readily offered them her milk. People around were astonished to see the baby goats get nourishment from the cow.
Hundreds of people from nearby villages have been thronging to witness this unique display of love and affection by the cow.
Vedic literatures rightly put it, ‘gavo visvasya matarah’, cow is the mother of all living beings in this universe.

In India, the cow is considered sacred not because Indian people are primitive worshipers of mythological totems but because Hindus intelligently understand that the cow is a mother. As children, nearly all of us were nourished with cow’s milk, and therefore the cow is one of our mothers. Certainly one’s mother is sacred, and therefore we should not kill the sacred cow. |
