COWS ARE COOL: LOVE ‘EM!

21.
This One Is ‘Paan’ Fanatic!
A motley crowd of amused onlookers gathers outside a tiny kiosk selling “Paan”, an Indian mouth-freshener made out of betel leaf, for their daily dose of entertainment.
Located in India’s western Rajkot town, the owner of ‘Shanker Paan Corner’ plays host to a very special client, who has since become a minor celebrity.
A chestnut-coloured cow, fondly named “Gauri” (another name for the consort of Lord Shiva, Hindu God of destruction) is also a paan fanatic.
It’s people who generally eat paan, but when people see the cow relishing the paan, they are taken aback. The shop owner says she had been coming to his shop since the last three years.
The owner of the shop, Jagadish Jawahar, who coincidentally carries a tattoo of a cow on his hand, considers his relation with Gauri to be “divine”.
Jagadish, the kiosk owner used to bring a “roti” (Indian pancake) for the cow everyday. But once he forgot to bring the “roti”. So he thought what should he give her and then decided to offer her a paan. This became a daily occurrence and now it’s nearly three years. “She normally likes the sweet variety,” says Jagadish.

She visits him at least five times a day, just like any other paan aficionado, and satisfies her urge for the betel leaf spiked with various masalas. She will leave only after tasting her daily dose of mouth watering Paan, otherwise stand adamant there.
She hasn’t missed her visit to the shop for a single day. She arrives exactly at the same time, and in all weather conditions.
It is a great entertainment for a lot of onlookers who would stand still lest they disturb her from enjoying that pleasure. None of them leaves the sight until they finish watching her relish her paan with closed eyes.
That Gauri is part of a larger species revered in the country as holy mother only makes matters easier for the bovine as the owner does not demand or expect charges for his services.
